Slow Cooker Tip - Cooking Desserts

  • It’s best to use a small rack or vegetable steamer when making a cake in your slow cooker to lift it off the bottom. This helps heat circulate more evenly.
  • If your slow cooker doesn’t have a baking rack, crumple aluminium foil and place it on the bottom, underneath the baking insert to help heat circulate when making cakes that need to be raised from the bottom of the cooker.
  • You need at larger slow cooker for making most cakes. A 5 litre model will usually hold a cake or springform pan.
  • Though sometimes it’s hard to resist when you’re making a delectable dessert, only lift the lid to check if your dessert is done. Lifting it too often will allow too much heat to escape.

Desserts usually take much less time in the slow cooker than meats, stews, and main dishes, so plan accordingly.

Super Soy Chocolate Fondue

Print Recipe

Preparation time: 2-5 minutes
Slow Cooker Size 3.5L+
Serves: 6
Cooking time: 15 minutes on High setting (actual time will depend on your slow cooker)

Make fun of fondue and other 70s dishes all you want: there’s no denying that everyone eats it up anyway, whether on fresh strawberries or cubes of angel food cake. Bananas, pretzels, and pineapple bits are also popular fondue conveyances. This recipe is very easy to make, right in your slow cooker. Smaller slow cookers are better for this recipe, but you could always double the recipe. It will get eaten.

Ingredients:

  • 1 340g (12oz) packet semisweet chocolate chips
  • ¾ cup soy milk
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  1. Combine all ingredients in slow cooker.
  2. Turn cooker on High setting and stir ingredients occasionally until chips are melted and sauce is smooth. It should take 10 to 15 minutes, but will depend on your particular slow cooker.
  3. If you serve the fondue in your slow cooker, turn it to “Warm” setting if your slow cooker has it, or Low otherwise. Or you can serve it in a fondue pot.
  4. Serve with an assortment of small foods that are easily skewered on fondue forks or shish kebab sticks.
