Slow Cooker Bolognese

  • 1 x 800 g (28 oz) can of crushed tomatoes
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped finely
  • 1 cup chopped baby carrots
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 x 170 g (6 oz) can of tomato paste
  • 0.5 kg (1 lb)  lean ground beef
  • cup whole milk
  • teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • teaspoon salt
  • cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • teaspoon black pepper, ground


  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the carrots, garlic and onion. Cook and stir for about 10 minutes.
  3. Add the ground beef into the skillet.
  4. Cook and stir.
  5. Remove the excess fat from the skillet.
  6. Add 1 cup of milk then reduce the heat to low and bring to simmer for 15 minutes.
  7. Transfer the beef mixture into the slow cooker.
  8. Bring the heat to high.
  9. Add the tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, pepper, oregano, basil, salt and red pepper flakes.
  10. Cook for 2 hours over high.
  11. Pour in cup of milk and grated Parmesan cheese.
  12. Stir and cook for another 2 hours over high.
