I am in the process of cooking your recipe for savoury barley soup, it has been on slow for 5hrs so I went to put tomatoes in only to find it has almost gone dry, there is no juice left at all?

Youd be hard pressed to find a simpler, more nutritious stew for supper. Served alongside crusty bread or cornbread, its hearty and nourishing, yet its light enough you wont feel guilty indulging in a decadent dessert afterwards!


  • 1 cup pearl barley
  • 5 cups vegetable broth or chicken broth
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 potatoes cut in chunks
  • 1 sweet potato cut in chunks
  • 1.5 lb (700 g) Brussels sprouts
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon parsley flakes
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • teaspoon dried dill weed
  • 2 tomatoes cut in wedges


  • Place all ingredients except for tomatoes into slow cooker.
  • Cover and cook on Low setting for approximately 5 to 6 hours
  • Add tomatoes and cook, covered, for another 10 minutes.
