  • 4 pork shoulder steaks or

    1.5 lb (700 g) boneless spare ribs (cut into 3 parts)
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 tablespoon sunflower oil
  • 2 tablespoons (all-purpose) plain flour
  • 3 tablespoons plum sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 450 ml (14 fl oz) chicken stock with grated rind and juice of 1 orange
  • 3 - 4 star anise
  • 1 dried or fresh red chilli (cut in half but optional)
  • salt and pepper
  • grated rind of 1 orange
  • steamed green vegetables with mashed potatoes


  • Preheat the slow cooker as per instruction from the manufacturer.
  • Heat oil in a large sized frying pan, add the pieces of pork and fry over high heat until browned on all sides.
  • Using a spotted spoon, lift the pork out the pan and place to a plate.
  • Add the onion to the pan and fry, stirring for 5 minutes until browned evenly.
  • Add the flour then mix the orange rind and juice, stock, soy sauce, plum sauce chilli and star anise.
  • Season with pepper and salt and bring to boil, stirring.
  • Place the pork to the slow cooker pot and pour the sauce over it.
  • Cover with the lid and cook for 8 to 10 hours.
  • Sprinkle with grated orange rind and serve with steamed green vegetables and mashed potatoes.
