Pork Orange with Star Anise

Ingredients:

  • 4 pork shoulder steaks or 700g (1½lb) boneless spare rib (cut into 3 parts)
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil
  • 2 tablespoons of plain flour
  • 3 tablespoons of plum sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 450ml (14fl oz) chicken stock with grated rind and juice of 1 orange
  • 3 to 4 whole star anise
  • 1 dried or fresh red chilli (cut in half but optional)
  • pepper and salt
  • grated rind of 1 orange
  • steamed green vegetables with mashed potatoes

Steps:

  1. Preheat the slow cooker as per instruction from the manufacturer.
  2. Heat oil in a large sized frying pan, add the pieces of pork and fry over high heat until browned on all sides.
  3. Using a spotted spoon, lift the pork out the pan and place to a plate.
  4. Add the onion to the pan and fry, stirring for 5 minutes until browned evenly.
  5. Add the flour then mix the orange rind and juice, stock, soy sauce, plum sauce chilli and star anise.
  6. Season with pepper and salt and bring to boil, stirring.
  7. Place the pork to the slow cooker pot and pour the sauce over it.
  8. Cover with the lid and cook for 8 to 10 hours.
  9. Sprinkle with grated orange rind and serve with steamed green vegetables and mashed potatoes.
