This soup is very well known in Asia, it is best if served with fried bread sticks.


  • 16 oz (450 g) ground pork
  • 2 cups long-grain rice rinsed well
  • 5 cm (2 inch) piece grated fresh ginger sliced thinly
  • 1 star anise
  • 8 cups chicken stock
  • 2 scallions white part only (sliced)
  • 1 garlic cloves crushed
  • white pepper
  • cup light soy sauce
  • bread sticks (to serve)
  • sesame oil to serve


  • Place the first seven ingredients in the slow cooker.
  • Cook for 5 hours on Low.
  • Add the soy sauce and white pepper. Add more white pepper if needed.
  • Sprinkle with sesame oil and serve.
