First time I had used a slow cooker and what a fantastic recipe to start with. Amazing. Came into the house to this tasty beef and tomato curry. Also added potatoes, ginger and garlic.

Contrary to popular opinion, the cow is not "sacred" in India. There are no Hindu Gods in the form of a cow and cows are not themselves worshipped. They are probably best described as revered, and beef products are, indeed, not eaten by Hindus. However, there are substantial numbers of Muslims and Christians in the Indian population and there is no reason for any of them not to cook with beef products. In any event "Indian" as applied to a recipe may just as well apply to the sub-continent as to the country (or any person emanating therefrom) and there may well be the odd Bangladeshi or Pakistani beef curry recipe as well.

Slow Cooker Indian Beef and Tomato Curry

Slow Cooker Indian Beef and Tomato Curry

Preparation time: 15 minutes
Slow Cooker Size 4L+
Serves: 4-6
Cooking time: 10 hours on LOW setting

Ingredients:

  • 750 grams (1½ lb) chuck or stew steak, diced into small cubes
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 2-4 tablespoons Indian curry paste
  • 420 (13oz) grams diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup (250ml, 8fl oz) beef stock
  • 1-2 cups vegetables of your choice, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons seasoned flour

Steps:

  1. 1. Coat the meat with the flour and fry or brown.
  2. Put all of the ingredients in the slow cooker, vegetables first then put the meat and add the onion.
  3. Cook for 8-10 hours over low heat.
  4. Serve immediately while hot.
